Can order be coaxed from chaos? My current body of work attempts to answer this question.
I strike a balance between non-representation and relationship. Expressive geometric forms are juxtaposed against layers of vibrant washes. When combined, these elements create a majestic pictorial equilibrium. Expansive rhythms of rich texture and hue are inspired by a mid-century modern aesthetic and combine with forms that evoke the urban jazz scene of the 1950s.
Within these paintings, I express the harmony that exists between improvisation and tightly controlled harmonies. This balance of spontaneity and deliberation gives each painting its own unique personality. Every inch of surface is saturated with intricate details obtained by a complex process of layered washes, frenetic mark-making, and slow, controlled mastery of the acrylic medium.
The creation of one shape informs the existence of the next, and so on until I've uncovered an entire universe within the canvas.
